HISTORY SINCE 1954

The club was formed in 1954 by a small select group of friends with a common interest in photography. One member of that group is still very much active within the club to this day - our president Ron Holloway.

Initially, the group met on one evening a month, enjoying the visiting speakers very much as we do today. In 1959, the club was asked by the farmers' Union to undertake the responsibility of making a photographic record of the new Spalding Flower Parade. This quickly turned into something quite big and an offshoot company was formed (Spalding Photographic) to cope with the demand of orders by the public for the transparencies that were being produced and ultimately sold. Ron says that the club was providing a service for the town. As interest in the club grew, although there were never more than 50 members at any one time, so the meetings became more frequent - to once a fortnight.

The arrival of cine photography brought an added dimension to the club with a separate group being formed and meeting on the other two evenings each week. When cine photography was superseded by video, interest waned and the group disbanded, but the club continued to meet on a weekly basis with an expanding programme of events. During the early years, the club organised an international exhibition and received entries from a very wide area, including abroad.

In more recent times, the club has acquired studio lights to satisfy the needs of members interested in portraiture and still life. Coming right up to date and moving into the digital era, a lap-top computer and digital projector have now become frequently used equipment at the club's regular meetings.

The club welcomes complete beginners and experienced photographers from all age groups and currently has around 30 members of mixed age, gender and ability interested in both film and digital photography. The club has a very open approach to photographic styles and techniques, and crucially aims to stimulate and encourage members of all abilities to fulfil their photographic potential.

Meetings are held every Wednesday evening, from September through to April inclusive, in The Bowls Pavilion, Castle Sports Complex, Albion Street, Spalding at 7:30pm.

A studio group meet on a frequent basis throughout the year. In addition to the winter programme, outings and events are arranged on an occasional basis during the summer break.

If photography is your passion -
or you think it could be, we would be very pleased to see you.
